The Rabbit Archives

Out at the farm

We’ve been more busy than usual lately and while that means that I have much more to blog about, it also means I have less time to blog.  I used to be able to hammer out a blog post in 3.2 seconds flat but something happened to the writer in me and I am no longer able to do that for some reason.  I still love to write. I long to write. I just can’t seem to fit it in but where there is a will there is a way or some such nonsense, right?

We went to a friend’s farm on Saturday.  They weren’t in town but Kait was farm sitting and there were a ton of baby animals that Maggie just had to see.

She couldn’t even be bothered to stop for a picture because COWS! so I barely got this picture of Lucy and her.  She wasn’t able to hold still enough for more than that.

lucyandmaggie

Until we were getting ready to leave and she became very upset and made many statements about her feelings.

maggiesad

“I just want to stay here with Kaity.”
“I just want to stay here and pet the cows.”
“I just want to stay here for a really, really long time.”

Turns out that all the mamas had put their babies down for their afternoon naps.  The sow was very protective over her piglets and you don’t mess with a mother pig. The calves were sleeping too and a couple of the mama cows made it quite clear that we’d better not wake their babies.  I experience this feeling every single day so I understood.

Kait said she was taking a picture of a different cow and this gal just walked up behind her and nudged her shoulder for a selfie.

And she got some pictures of the babies while we weren’t there.

The 1-year-old was clearly annoyed by his younger brothers’ antics.

And the piglets.  Kait said she sat on a fence at a safe distance because that’s a big angry pig right there.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to take the younger kids back out there this week for a better look.

One particular cow took a liking to Rabbit.

A serious liking.DSC_0486

She kept trying to rub her face on him and wrap herself around him. He told her he was a married man but it seems she took that as a challenge. It was quite humorous.

Joe met a Lady.

Lady is a dog.  She’s a Great Pyrenees and she is so sweet and much larger than she looks in this picture.

Super friendly cow again.

And Gabe with Lanie.  He was holding her most of the time so I could take pictures.

lanieserious

She was super smiley until we took her over to see the animals. Then she just stared and stared at everything and everyone.

gabeandlanie

Before we hiked it out to the animals I got a bunch of pictures of her being super happy and adorable in her new Carters duds.

laniesmile

I’ll write about my new love for Carters and Oshkosh in another post because what they are doing in the T21 community really deserves some extra attention.

DSC_0381

She’s growing and learning and achieving milestones and I’m so proud of her.
And just like her typical counterparts she’s curious and wants what she wants…

DSC_0397 (1)

And often what she wants is to put leaves in her mouth so she is actively learning the word no.

DSC_0427

I had a picture of everybody walking out to the pasture but it disappeared and that is disappointing to me.

Can you tell I have a better camera? I appropriated one of Kait’s Nikons and now if I snap enough pictures I can usually get a few decent photos. That’s the type of photographer I am.  Just point and shoot and shoot and shoot.

And hope for the best.

We’re at a change of command dinner which is usually fancy and formal but is not this time.

It’s a beach theme and for some reason this meant to somebody that each table should come stocked with mustaches.  That was all fine and well until I made the mistake of saying they looked like uni-brows and Rabbit heard me.

Looks totally natural, right? I bet you’d never guess they were fake, would you.

Seriously though, I can’t take this man anywhere. Not even to an official military function.

Here is another one.

He is having a serious conversation in the above picture.

This is who I married, people. I know you’re at least a little jealous.

So we got a Christmas tree

Shopping for a Christmas tree is one of those things that I would do the day before Thanksgiving if I could because Christmas Vacation has taught me that having a tree up while eating turkey and fixins with a bunch of people over is much more entertaining than not having one.  However, being that there are certain adult members of my family who are against having a tree in the house before December 1st because their inner grinch won’t allow fun that early in the year, I usually have to wait until we are a week or two into December before I get to decorate my own Douglas fir.

This year I only had to wait until December 2nd though.  It is tradition that Rabbit, Kait, and I head to Lowes to look for a Christmas tree, get out of the car and walk up to the tree lot in front, then without hesitation immediately leave and go to Home Depot’s tree tent, all the while being berated by Kait for not going to Home Depot first.  Then we walk around for 10 minutes and argue about what height, width, whether we should get a 2D tree…

IMG_20151202_192004725-picsay

…which was incredibly flat.  That pictures don’t do it’s squashedness justice but Kait felt sorry for it and suggested we take it home and maybe use it as a bed or something.

We didn’t.
IMG_20151202_192011742-picsay

We ended up adopting the one that Rabbit’s got in the background.  You can’t see the tree he’s holding but it was a little better than marginal and I wanted a taller tree than we normally get because we have a high ceiling where our tree goes and this one was 8 or 9 feet.  There was an absolutely perfect 12′ one I really wanted but we don’t have a stand to accommodate a tree of that height so this is the one we decorated last night.

IMG_20151203_102408888-picsay

I would like to point out that the ornaments Ben and I picked out at Target the other day, while inexpensive, were incredibly glittery.  I don’t do glitter.  At all.  I hate how it gets onto and into everything and there is no way to get rid of it.  Usually I deal with it at Christmas time because according to Lucy a Christmas tree’s primary job is to sparkle.  However, these ornaments have created such an over abundance of glitter that I don’t think we’ll be able to rid ourselves of it.  After trimming the tree last night it was as if a giant bag of sparkles had exploded in our living room.  And kitchen.  And dining room.

Lucy is not disappointed.

I do still need a tree topper for it.  All the ones I like are red and since we are doing a teal, turquoise, and silver themed tree this year a red topper just isn’t going to cut it.  I’m sure it won’t be too difficult to find an appropriate topper.

Or we could just go with terrifying.

Where I get a deep fryer for Christmas.

waffleI got a deep fryer from Rabbit for Christmas.  I wanted the fryer pretty badly so don’t judge the man.  I had put it in all the kids’ heads to tell Dad that mom wanted a bigger fryer and I mentioned wanting one about 42 times.  He really had no choice.

Anyway, Rabbit made Waffles yesterday and because we now have a good sized fryer Rabbit did the only reasonable thing. He fried one of those bad boys and learned that fried Belgium waffles are the only appropriate way to eat waffles, people. The fryer took them from being delicious to holy houndogs Batman!

Seriously.  These suckers are slap yo’ mama good.

I deep fried a turkey wrap the other day too.  I don’t think my life will ever be the same.

We went to Rabbit’s command picnic on Saturday and it was filthy humid. It was nice that our entire family could go because now that Kait has a job we aren’t always able to be all together for family outings.  She makes up for it by bringing me grilled chicken nuggets and lemonade from Chick-Fil-A a couple times a week.

Even though she came she was only able to stay long enough to eat and get this picture with Lucy before she had to get to work.

kaitnlucy

My girls are so gorgeous.

There was one of those playground merry-go-rounds that every kid has a love/vomit relationship with.   It started with just a couple of my kids but, like zombies to a Daryl’s motorcycle, as soon as the thing got to spinning more kids seem to come out of the woodwork.  Then they begged Joe to come spin them FASTERFASTER-NOSTOP-IMGOINGTOTHROWUP!

wpid-wp-1406650665207.jpeg

I’ve been watching too much The Walking Dead, I think, but what on earth is Daryl doing with a chopper during the Zombie apocalypse?  As Kait pointed out yesterday, Like seriously they have those silent hybrids now.
Gotta keep up his tough guy image I guess.

Kait is just starting the series so all those stupid things we’ve already gotten past she’s just now beginning to question and none of this has anything to do with Rabbit’s command picnic so I don’t know why we’re even having this discussion right now.

We did meet another large(ish) family there. At the picnic, not at the zombie apocalypse.  They have 5 kids and, wouldn’t ya know it, his callsign is Rabbit too.  They were very nice but we have more kids so we win.  I’m still waiting for my prize.

I should probably go now.  I need to research bomb shelters and emergency food storage.

A couple of weeks ago Rabbit had a large pile of rocks dropped off in our backyard.  He was creating a storage place for the kids’ bicycles so he could get them out of his workshop because the workshop is only for doing work things like the sawing and the hammering and the man stuff according to him.

So we had this pile of rocks outside and Lucy suddenly became very interested in what was going to happen to those rocks and followed Rabbit around the yard asking questions and giving her opinions about everything.  When Rabbit got his shovel out to start moving the rocks Lucy grabbed her little red shovel and decided to help him out and I took pictures and then Google kindly turned them into a stop motion movie for me which I am now going to share with you because this is my blog and that’s what it’s for.

dadandlushoveling

I might add that at three, she is as good at shoveling rocks as some of her older brothers and she is a pretty hard worker as long as it means she get’s ask as many random questions as she wants.  Like, Are there any whales swimming in my pool? And, Why don’t I see any elephants? And, Why does Dad get the big shovel?

If you turn around and ask the questions back to her she usually has the answer. I think she just likes to start conversations.  Either that or she’s testing human intelligence because she’s planning to someday maybe take over the world because she dearly loves to be the boss of things. Only not in a leader type of way, but more in a Gremlin-y way.

You know…  Give me all your candy and popcorn and entertain me or I’ll get growly.

Rabbit is best friends with everybody. EVERYBODY.

And here we have my husband talking to the cable guy about helicopters for the last half hour because apparently they were on the same ship a long, long time ago.

ryanonphone

Gabe was with Rabbit the other day when they had to return a rental car.
He came home and asked, Does Dad really know everybody?

Yes, Son.  It would appear he does, wouldn’t it.

sammy

Sam: Mom, if I have enough for sodas and cheeseburgers I’m going to buy everybody a toy.

Me: You’re buying toys if you have enough money for sodas and cheeseburgers?

Sam: Um… Yes.

Rabbit: Everybody gets toys?

Sam: And sodas and cheeseburgers.

Rabbit: You should run for president.

Kait: No.  You should run for Oprah.  You get a toy, and you get a toy, and you get a toy…  YOU ALL GET TOYS!

Sam: Wha…???…

Kait:  SAM FOR OPRAH!

And now the world is right again

Rabbit is finally home after a week doing work on the other side of the continent.

image

While there he had the opportunity to see an old friend and some family and all on the Navy’s dime. So bonus.
Even though it was only a week and nothing like the deployment he finished up last summer, I’m just really glad he’s home.

His suitcase looks way smaller in this picture than it actually is.

I don’t have time to title this post.

It’s Sunday but there is no church for us because I have to drive Rabbit to the airport where he will fly off to Cali for the week to help write a book that will make absolutely zero sense to the vast majority of the human race.

It’s a work thing and it is good for his career and a week is nothing after his last back-to-back deployments.

Kait’s car has broken down again and try as he did, Rabbit could not get it fixed before leaving and Kait is afraid to drive our 12 passenger van and she doesn’t want to learn to drive a manual so the Mini is right out.  This leaves me as the sole driver while Rabbit is gone and I should be accustomed to that but I’m not because Kait has been my go-getter for the last 6 months.  I’m super glad it’s only a week.

So Rabbit got to packing this morning and he simply cannot travel lightly.  Seriously.

If we were going away for a week we’d each take one suitcase and a backpack.

Guess which one is his.

suitcases

He actually wanted to buy a bigger suitcase, if you can believe it.

It’s not just suitcases though.
His daily driver compared to my daily driver:

cars

Funny, right?

I really hate going to the airport as you might remember from this blog post, but I must so I have to now get off this here computer.  At least he’ll drive on the way there.
