Church Driven People – What Drives You?
If all the worship bands stopped playing what would you do? If church wasn’t entertaining, where would you go? What if children’s church was no longer offered? What if the Welcome Ministry was gone?
Would you still go to church?
If your pastor said that for the next six months he wanted worship to be hymns only would you still get up on Sunday morning?
If church stopped being fun and entertaining and started feeling more like a battle rally would you show up?
If there was nobody designated to shake hands at the door would you have and show genuine joy towards visitors?
If church became identical to biblical descriptions of church would your face be in the congregation?
It begs the question…
Why do we go to church?
Can we find joy in the no frills, warrior filled church?
What would Christ’s service look like if He held one tomorrow?
A band? Lights? Sound effects? Decorations?
Would he send the children away?
I’m not saying that all large, contemporary churches are bad. I am not trying to talk against them – at least not in this post.
I’m just asking the question – What drives us to go to church.
I know my answer. Do you know yours?

You’ve just described our choice of church – the churches that we’ve grown up in. The last two congregations that my husband served told him to move on because they wanted the entertainment and the toe-tapping and the programs. Personally, I go to hear my sins forgiven, receive my Lord in His Word and in His Body and Blood, to be encouraged to cling to Him regardless of the world or its consequences for doing so. I want the stability of the law and the blessing and mercy of the Gospel. I can get the rest on the radio or the theater.
Very thought provoking questions today.
We are going more and more away from those type of “entertainment driven” models of church. Looking to go more “organic” in all areas of our life. Not quite separated, but waiting to see where He will lead, confident it will be sooner than later.
Our church is not entertainment at all. I love this, sometimes I think that it is a battle when I am in the middle of training a one year old to sit still and listen. I question myself as to why I go to church. The reason is simple. It is what God wants me to do. No other reason but that is really needed. I also find that on the days when I battle myself the most to get there, those are the days I need to be there the most.
