It’s called the alligator park because there are real live alligators there, people.
A few blocks from our house we have a park the kids call the alligator park . I thought it was called that because it has this big green dragon-looking tunnel but I was wrong. To get to the alligator park you have to walk on this short little road through a wooded area. It’s not driven on and is completely safe. Or so I thought. Again, I was wrong.
That’s twice in one day, people. I’m a little off my game, apparently.
It all started with a turtle:
The boy down the street, James, stopped by our house to tell us we had a ginormous turtle trying to hide under our van.
He was about 14 inches long – a good sized slider turtle. We played around with him, took some pictures, a bunch of the neighbor kids stopped by to see, and he came out of his shell and ran and it was so funny to watch all the boys scatter. Then I had group of boys walk him back to this innocent little stream near the alligator park where there are always a lot of other turtles. I told Joe to carry him to make sure he got there safely because one of the boys was sure he was going to keep him in a wading pool because he mom never looks in there.
On their way one of our grumpy civilian base police officers who doesn’t like kids very much stopped the boys and accused them of stealing the turtle. Whatever because that really isn’t much of a story compared to live alligators.
Apparently Mr. Turtle was hiding under my van to escape all these 8 and 9 foot bull alligators coming over to say hey-o to the one little 5 foot female alligator WHO LIVES RIGHT THERE BY THE ALLIGATOR PARK AND I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT!
Needless to say, my kids haven’t been traveling to that park lately because alligators being cuddly and making good family pets is a common misconception. They’re ornery and have very strong jaws and lots of teeth and live under beds, terrorizing nine year old children.
And some grown adults.
And hey Marty – Thought you’d like to know that this is the same kind of turtle as Midalic T. Turtle. Can you even imagine? You would have had to keep him in your pool. HA!
