One Big Tom

My husband and I went out to get a turkey not long ago and after much searching found a large 26 lb tom. For some reason we had trouble finding a big turkey that was reasonably priced. The Commissary had 30 lb birds but they were all around $1.30 per lb.
I wasn’t paying that.
We found our 26 lb Butterball at Winn-Dixie for $.99 a lb. Still more than I wanted to pay but all the $.79 per lb birds were little 13 pounders. That just won’t cut it in my family of 8. We really like to have at least a little leftover.
So, I stuffed Tom with yummy stuffing, buttered him all over, and put him in an oven bag – this is how I always cook turkey. Then, I filled the bottom of the bag with 12 cups of broth and seasonings, onions, carrots, potatoes, and celery and stuck it in the oven.
It is so heavy it is weighing down the oven rack.
You can’t really tell it but the broth is coming up the sides with the veggies. Those veggies are going to be so delicious!
Now a lot of people tell me that huge turkeys always turn out too tough but I have never experienced this. My turkey meat always falls off the bone and I am planning on this one being no different.
We may not be able to spend Thanksgiving with our extended families this year but at least we’ll be eating good – and we have so much to be thankful for. I’m not complaining.

This looks awesome. I love how the rack is bending. My father-in-law cooks to 20+ pound turkeys every year. We feed no less than 30 people. However, while I also cook mine in the bag – not with broth I am going to do that next time thanks for the tip.
– he bbq’s his. They are so yummy.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Please let me know how it turned out… It sounds so yummy
Mommy Reg –
30 people and a bbq’ed turkey – do we have the same father-in-law? My FIL does that, too. My husband is going to try smoking one for Christmas. He loves his bbq and we are far from family for at least the next few years.

The turkey turned out perfect and the gravy made with the broth was the best gravy I have ever made. I think it was a combination of the turkey and veggie juices along with the poultry seasoning I added during the gravy thickening process. Who knows – it was just really good.
Yum that turkey looks great. except for the onions yuk. all else is great. love yall’s video of the little piggies. funnny.

You sound like my 3 year old, Ben. He absolutely despises onions!
The piggy idea was fun. Kinda feel silly, but it was fun none-the-less.
Thanks for the comment!
