Selling Wood To A Tree
Let’s talk about people who constantly talk about things that nobody else has any clue about.
I don’t play video games. Okay, I like to play sports on the Wii occasionally but you won’t catch me playing Zelda or Star Fox or whatever (although those are probably the only two games that I have any knowledge in). Therefor, I am not fluent in video game lingo. I don’t ‘get’ the characters and their adventures. I don’t know who is on what game, who is bad, and who is good, who Cloud or Duke Nukem are, and, frankly, I don’t care.
Yet…
There are people I know who talk to me about video games as though I am a character in them. It is preposterous to them that I have no idea what they are talking about. After learning that I am a non-gamer, they still insist on discussing at length their video game ventures like they can persuade me to be interested in the bag of digital, magic beans they found as if they could come out of the TV screen, sprout, and grow gold.
Then, we have the reality show watchers. Now, I don’t have TV so, naturally, when somebody starts talking to me about a reality show that is the first thing I tell them. It might surprise you to know that 99.99% of the time this does not stop the obsessed viewer from continuing to detail each character’s life for me; perhaps so that I can get caught up on what I am missing. They may not be able to remember to brush their teeth or comb their hair but they have extensive knowledge of each reality show participant and they can spout off these facts in Jeopardy-like fashion.
My quarrel here is not that people play video games or watch reality TV. I can’t say I am ‘for’ this way of spending time but who am I to tell another person what to do with their hours (unless you’re my kid).
That is not what this post is about.
I am talking about those who are so one-track minded that they have lost the ability to see past their own obsessiveness and understand that not everybody can possibly be, or want to be on the same page with them. It is like trying to sell wood to a tree. It ain’t gonna happen and the more you try the more coo-coo you appear.
