What A Day

We have 1 girl and 5, yes 5, little boys. Today, surprisingly, we experienced our first broken bone. One of the doctors said with 5 boys we were WAY overdue.
Sledding is supposed to be fun but Matthew(4) said today that he would not be ‘sliding’ on that sled again. He and 3 of his brothers were on a toboggan type sled and they kinda side swiped our wooden fence. Matthew’s foot got caught in the fence post but the sled didn’t stop.
So, he broke his tibia and fibula just above the ankle of his right leg. They had to knock him out to set and put a full leg cast on his leg. He is staying overnight at the hospital and he can come home tomorrow.
He was in so much pain and my heart broke for him everytime we had to move him. My kids are pretty tough which means there aren’t too many tears when they are hurt. I knew immediately after Matthew wouldn’t stop crying that he was in serious pain because he doesn’t cry too much about the small things. When I took his boot off and saw his leg I knew it was broken. The bone didn’t break the skin but I could see it was broken and very swollen. It looked like he had a golf ball under his skin.
This is the very first broken bone I have dealt with, ever. Matthew continues to be in pain everytime he is moved, even just a few inches but he is fine if he is left alone. The nurse is spoiling him sufficiently with pudding, ice cream, and popsicles. Ryan is staying with him at the hospital tonight and brought him his favorite sausage pizza. I am thinking Matthew may not want to leave tomorrow!
I SO wish I could be there with him but Ryan can’t feed Sammy(8 mo) and he won’t take a bottle of the liquid gold I have stored up in the freezer. Prayfully I will be able to sleep tonight!

Oh, I’m so sorry that this happened. Praying for a speedy healing.
Wow…first broken bone of all of the boys and you have some adventure-seeking boys
Well, we also will pray for a speedy recovery for Matthew.
Hi, I just found your blog through a link through a link… not even sure where from now! It must have been horrible to see your little 4 year old in such pain! My 2 year old just fractured his elbow, which wasn’t nearly as bad as what you described- and that even broke my heart. (He’s my oldest, my 2nd is just 6 months). I love reading about your beautiful family and beautiful blessings of children- we just recently decided to take God seriously at being fruitful and multiplying as well! Speedy recovery for Matthew!

Thank you guys for your prayers! Matthew is resting, though not always comfortably. He is doing okay and his pain medicine is helping.
I truly do thank you for remembering Matthew in you prayers.
get well soon!
